AI SEO for Contractors: Get Named When Homeowners Ask ChatGPT
AI SEO gets your company named when a homeowner asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews who to call. Those tools mostly repeat what other websites say about you. As an AI SEO agency for contractors, DG Agency builds answer-first pages, schema, citations and roundup listings, then tracks which calls and forms came from AI.

How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my company?
Get named on the pages ChatGPT reads. We tracked 20 contractor marketing prompts in SE Ranking from September 20 to October 19, 2026, across 6 AI engines. The answers cited 149 different websites. One agency with zero backlinks still showed up in 21 answers, because best-of lists named it. Roundups and directories beat link counts.
The same thing happens when a homeowner asks for the best plumber in their town. The answer gets built from pages about you, and your own site is only one of them. Your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your directory listings and any local roundup that names you all go into it.
Clutch, the agency directory, was cited in 11 of the answers we tracked. For a roofer or an electrician the equivalent sources are the trade and city lists AI already pulls from. Getting onto those is slow, unglamorous work. It also does more for you than another blog post.

Does AI SEO actually work?
It's working for us, and we can show the tracking. From September 20 to October 19, 2026, DG Agency was named in 31 AI answers across the 20 prompts we track in SE Ranking, more than any other agency in that set. AI tools cited dgagency.co as a source 6 times, every one of them our own pages.
The weak spot is just as clear in the same data. Only 2 of the 149 sites cited in those answers mention us. The agencies cited most often got there through other people's pages, not their own. So we're doing for ourselves what we do for clients: claiming directory profiles and pitching the roundups that AI keeps citing.
That's also why we put a required "How did you find us?" field on our own forms, with AI tools as an option. If you can't see the leads AI sends, you can't tell whether any of this is paying for itself.

What does DG Agency do as an AI SEO agency?
We work on both sides of the answer: the pages about you and your own pages. That means answer-first pages, schema and an llms.txt file, pages built on your own facts, consistent citations, roundup listings, and tracking that shows which calls and forms came from AI. Here's the work, in the order we usually do it.
- Answer-first pages. Each service and city page opens with a 40 to 60 word answer to the question a homeowner actually asks, so an AI tool can quote it whole.
- Schema markup for your business, services and FAQs, plus an llms.txt file that gives AI crawlers a plain summary of what you do and where you work.
- Pages built on your own facts. Your license, the areas you really serve, the jobs you do most, real project details. AI tools quote specifics that no other site has.
- Citations with your name, address and phone identical on Google, Bing, Apple, Yelp and the main directories.
- Roundup listings. We find the best-of lists AI answers cite for your trade and city, and pitch your company for inclusion with real proof.
- AI referral tracking. Visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar tools tagged in your analytics, and a required "How did you find us?" field on every form.
What does ChatGPT say when someone asks for a contractor marketing agency?
From October 18 to 21, 2026, ChatGPT named DG Agency on all four days when asked for the best marketing agency for electrical contractors in Southern California, first on two of them. It also named us every day for Google LSA agencies for roofers in California. Often it cited our Google listing, not our site.
The same pull shows where we're missing. For HVAC lead generation in Orange County and for plumbing and electrical marketing in San Diego, ChatGPT never named us in those four days. It named agencies with pages and listings for that exact trade and city. For local SEO near the Inland Empire it named us three days running, citing our Riverside County page, then dropped us on the fourth.
That swing is normal, which is why one screenshot proves nothing. For a roofer, the work starts with the questions a homeowner would type into ChatGPT for your trade and your towns. We check what it answers over weeks, note which sites it cites, and get you onto those sites.

Can AI tools even read my website?
Check before anything else. Some site builders, security plugins and firewalls block AI crawlers like GPTBot, PerplexityBot and Google's crawlers without telling you. If they can't fetch your pages, nothing on them gets quoted. We check your robots.txt and firewall rules, then confirm the pages load as plain text a crawler can read.
Pages that load everything with JavaScript can also come through empty to some crawlers. Service pages should put the answer, the price range if you share one, your license and your service area in the page itself, not behind a tab or a widget.
Does schema or llms.txt help me show up in AI?
They help AI tools read your site correctly, but they won't get you named on their own. Schema states your business name, services, area and hours in a format a crawler can't misread. An llms.txt file gives AI crawlers a plain summary. Neither one replaces reviews, citations and being named on other sites.
We still add both, because they're cheap and they remove guesswork. But if someone sells you schema as the whole AI strategy, they're selling the easy part of the job.
How do I know if AI is sending me calls?
Ask every lead and tag every visit. We add a required "How did you find us?" field to your website forms, with AI tools as an option, and tag visits that come from AI sites in your analytics. Your office asks callers the same question. Without both, AI leads get logged as Google or word of mouth.
For calls, the cleanest setup is a CallRail number per source with a lead source picklist in your CRM that includes AI search. Then the monthly report can show AI next to LSA, the map and Yelp.
Where does AI SEO fit with the rest of my marketing?
On top of the basics, not instead of them. AI answers lean on the same signals as the Google map: reviews, a strong Business Profile and consistent listings. If those are weak, AI has little to repeat about you. Fix them first, keep Local Services Ads and the map producing calls, and AI SEO has something to build on.
For Biz-E-Bee Plumbing & Rooter, a new Inland Empire company, we built the website, a brand-new Google Business Profile, on-page SEO, keyword posts and AI search work together. In the first 15 days of that work they landed a $35,000 commercial sewer job. We can't tell you which piece earned that call, and we won't pretend it was the AI work alone.
If you're starting from zero, start with Google LSA management and local SEO that books jobs.
Questions owners ask us
What does an AI SEO agency do for a contractor?
It works on the pages AI tools read before they name a company. That means your own site, written so each page answers one question in its first paragraph, plus your Google Business Profile, directory listings and the best-of roundups AI answers cite. A good one also tracks how many calls and forms AI actually sends you.
What's the difference between AI SEO, AEO and GEO?
Mostly the label. Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) both mean getting named inside AI answers instead of only ranking as a blue link. For a contractor the work overlaps heavily with local SEO. Reviews, a clean Business Profile and consistent listings feed both Google's map and the AI answers.
Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my company?
No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Nobody controls what an AI tool says, and answers change from day to day. What we can do is put your company on the pages those tools cite, make your own pages easy to quote, and show you every month whether AI is naming you and sending calls.
Will AI Overviews kill my calls from Google?
They change where the clicks go, which is why being inside the answer matters. A homeowner with a leak still needs a phone number, and Google still shows Local Services Ads and the map for those searches. Keep the map pack and LSA strong, then add AI SEO so the written answers name you too.
How much does AI SEO cost?
None of the top-ranking AI SEO agencies we checked in October 2026 published a price. At DG Agency, AI SEO is part of the monthly retainer, which starts at $5,000 and also covers your Google Business Profile, Local Services Ads, citations and reporting. We don't sell it alone, because AI answers lean on that same work.
Is there an AI that can do SEO for me?
AI tools can draft pages, suggest keywords and write schema, and we use them. What they can't do is get your company listed on the roundups and directories AI answers cite, verify your license and service area, or call a supplier for a dealer-locator listing. The parts that get you named still need a person.
Which AI SEO agency is the best?
The one that can show you AI naming its own company and its clients, with the tracking to back it up. Ask for the prompts they track, the engines they check and the leads AI sent. Most agencies ranking for AI SEO serve SaaS and enterprise brands. For a contractor, pick one that also runs your map pack and LSA.
How long does AI SEO take for a contractor?
Plan in months, not weeks. A new directory listing or roundup mention has to go live and get read again before AI answers change. Your own pages can start getting cited sooner once they answer questions directly. We don't have a client before-and-after number to quote yet, so we won't promise a timeline we can't back.
